Twitter Erupts As Devon Conway Smashes Century On Test Debut Against England At Lord's

New Zealand opener Devon Conway had a dream start to his Test career as he scored an attractive hundred in his first outing during the first Test of the two-match series against England being played at the home of cricket Lord’s, London.

Conway, who was born in Transvaal, South Africa, and even played some cricket for the Gauteng team, move to Wellington, New Zealand in 2018. He was awarded a contract for domestic cricket in Wellington and it started an amazing career in cricket for the left-handed opener. In March 2019, he was named as the Men’s Domestic Player of the Year at the annual New Zealand Cricket awards.

His highest point came when he scored 327* for Wellington against Canterbury in an FC match and then in a T20 match, hit a 49-ball century, showing that he was an all-format player primed to play for New Zealand. He became eligible to play for Blackcaps in August 2020 and made his international debut in November 2020 in a T20I match against West Indies.

So far he has played 108 FC matches, scoring 7130 runs with 18 centuries and 32 half-centuries at an average of 47.21. In 84 List-A games, Conway has 3329 runs at an average of 46.23 with 9 centuries and 19 fifties, while in 94 T20 matches, he has 3149 runs with two centuries and 23 half-centuries at a strike rate of 129.74.

He has played 14 T20Is and 3 ODIs for New Zealand, scoring 473 and 225 runs respectively. He has one ODI century and a total of 5 half-centuries and has a T20I best of 99*.

Test Debut With Style And A Century In First Test At Lord’s For Devon Conway

Recently, New Zealand included Devon Conway in their squad for the England tour which consisted of two Tests against the hosts and the final of the ICC World Test Championship against India. On the eve of the first Test which is being played at the Lord’s starting on June 2nd, BlackCaps skippers Kane Williamson hinted that Conway is slated for a debut at Lord’s.

Well, Devon Conway starred on his debut as he scored a brilliant century in his maiden Test off just 163 balls with 11 fours to his name. This came after another debutant, England’s Ollie Robinson had removed Tom Latham for 23 and James Anderson got rid of Kane Williamson for 13 runs. Robinson then accounted for Ross Taylor as well for 14 runs, leaving New Zealand 114/3.

As Devon Conway became the first batsman since Sourav Ganguly of India in 1996, to score a century on his Test debut at the Lord’s and 12th New Zealand batsman to do so, wishes and laurels flooded Twitter and we have picked some of the best tweets.
