The second ODI of the three-match series which was played at Lord’s on July 14, 2022, saw England outplaying India in all departments as their bowlers helped them level the series 1-1 with a victory

India came into this match at the home of cricket with huge confidence behind them especially after beating England at Oval in the first match by 10 wickets in a dominating performance. England had made 110 runs with Jasprit Bumrah taking 6/19 and Rohit Sharma’s 76* helped India make 114 inside 19 overs.

In the second ODI, Rohit Sharma continued the trend of winning tosses and chose to bowl first at Lord’s as well. India made one change with Shreyas Iyer making way for Virat Kohli, who had missed the first ODI due to a groin niggle.

Moeen Ali (47) and David Willey (41) and contributions from Jonny Bairstow (38), Liam Livingstone (33), and Ben Stokes (21) took England to 246 in 49 overs. For India, Yuzvendra Chahal picked 4/47, while Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya picked 2 wickets apiece.

The target was not a big one in the context of how ODIs are played in modern times, but England opening bowlers Reece Topley and David Willey, along with Craig Overton came out all guns blazing and dismissed captain Rohit Sharma for a duck in 10 balls.

Shikhar Dhawan followed soon for 9 runs with Topley taking both the wickets. Rishabh Pant, who was promoted to the no.4 spot, couldn’t do much, scoring a duck. Virat Kohli looked good for his 16, but his habit of poking at deliveries outside off led to his downfall.

England kept picking wickets at regular intervals as Suryakumar fell for 27, Hardik Pandya made 29 and Mohammad Shami made an entertaining 23 runs.

However, Reece Topley did the job with a five-wicket haul, finishing with 6/24, the best-ever bowling figures by an Englishman at Lord’s as India were bowled out for 146 and lost the match by 100 runs. This win for England also helped them level the series 1-1 with the final ODI to be played in Manchester on July 17.

Twitterverse was critical of India’s batting performance, but lauded Topley and England bowling unit’s abilities and shared their reactions on Twitter.
