It was a historic day for Bangladesh women’s cricket as they lifted the Asia Cup title for the first time in their history after beating India by three wickets in the final of the competition in Malaysia.

Courtesy some impressive all-round performances, Bangladesh held their nerves and clinched a nerve-jangling thriller in the final delivery of the match. For yet another time Rumana Ahmed bagged the Player of the Match Award following a good all-round show.

It was the first ever time that any team apart from India won the competition.

The Indian Eves had won all the previous six editions. Earlier in the day, India posted a below par total of 112 on the board in their allotted 20 overs.

Moreover, it was only the innings of Harmanpreet Kaur which provided them with the much-needed impetus and allowed them to creep past the 100 mark.

Harmanpreet scored 56 out of 42 deliveries, an innings which was decorated with seven fours.

Regular fall of wickets prevented them from going any further. However, the major talking point of the Indian innings was the dismissal of Anuja Patil.

The middle order batswoman Anuja was given out while ‘obstructing the field’ by the third umpire even when the on-field umpire ruled her not out.

It was the second ball of ninth over of Jahanara Alam that Harmanpreet guided the ball towards the keeper.

On the other end, Anuja asked for a quick single but was denied. As she turned around,  she saw the ball coming towards her and changed the direction spontaneously.

A baffling decision:

The throw was directed towards the stumps and the Bangladesh fielders made an appeal for ‘obstructing the field’.

Despite the on-field umpire giving her not out, the third umpire felt otherwise. He overturned the decision and ruled the decision in favour of the bowling team. Twitterati amused at the umpire ruled Anuja out.

India gave a tough fight and took the match to the last over. However, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur was unable to defend nine runs in the final over.

Furthermore, it was Jahanara Alam, who struck the winning runs and the celebrations knew no bounds.
