Pakistan pacer Umar Gul is amongst the elite pacemen produced by Pakistan. Umar Gul spearheaded the Pakistan bowling attack across formats before falling off the radar as new bowlers took over. While the nation as produced pace bowlers like Imran Khan, Sarfraz Nawaz, Waqar Younis, and Wasim Bari, Gul has highlighted one name who has remained a role model for all the generations in Pakistan.

Gul believes that former left-arm seamer Wasim Akram has remained an idol for all the youngsters wanting to take up fast bowling growing up. It is Wasim Akram who is the successful pace bowler produced by Pakistan, having 916 wickets under his belt across ODIs and Tests. Akram’s 414 Test scalps are the highest for Pakistan while the 502 is the second-most in ODI history.

Umar Gul took to his official Twitter handle and wished the man of the match of the 1992 World Cup final on account of his birthday (3rd of June). Akram took three wickets in the victorious tournament-decider while also making a quick-fire 33 off 18 deliveries.

The 36-year-old wrote a caption as “Happy birthday to the legend, the role model for all generations Wasim Akram. Here’s wishing you health and happiness always,”

As far as Umar Gul’s own career is concerned, he represented Pakistan in 47 Tests, 130 ODIs, and 60 T20Is. Gul’s 85 wickets are the second-most for Pakistan in T20 internationals and he also has two fifers in the format.

The right-arm pacer’s last game for Pakistan came in September 2016, which was an ODI against England in Cardiff.
