Vernon Philander To Retire From International Cricket After England Series

Veteran fast bowler from South Africa Vernon Philander has announced that he will retire from international cricket after the series against England. The Proteas will play four Tests against England starting from December 26 (Thursday). Since making his debut in 2011, Philander has emerged as one of the greatest fast bowlers to represent South Africa at the international arena.
The right-arm fast bowler made an emphatic Test debut against Australia claiming eight wickets including a five-for in the second innings that helped South Africa bowl out the Aussies for 47 to register an eight-wicket victory. Vernon Philander also took a record-breaking 51 wickets in his first seven Test matches which earned him the 2012 South African Cricketer of the Year.

While revealing his retirement news, Philander said that he feels this is the right time to step down and give the youngsters a chance to take the country’s cricket forward. He thanked his father, Cricket South Africa, and everybody associated with his game for being a part of his journey.
“I would like to hereby announce that I will be retiring from international cricket at the conclusion of the Test series against England. I feel that it is the appropriate time to conclude what has been an amazing journey,” said Philander.
“I want to give thanks to my Heavenly Father for blessing me with the opportunity to represent my country for the last 12 years. It has been an honour and privilege to have played alongside the very best in the game as well as being part of the best test team for a number of years,” he added.

Meanwhile, Vernon Philander focus lies on the upcoming series against England. South Africa have been under pressure in recent times failing to put up solid performances and Philander will be looking forward to helping the Proteas come back on track beating the Joe Root-led side.
Vernon Philander’s international career spanned more than 12 years as he grew into one of the finest players to represent South Africa and played 97 matches across all three formats, taking a combined 261 wickets with 1784 runs scored.
