Chris Gayle Finds Form In IPL 2021, Helps Punjab To Second Win

There were concerns over Chris Gayle’s form with the bat coming into the IPL 2021. With scores of 0, 16, and 13 for the West Indies in the T20I series versus Sri Lanka preceding the IPL, there were speculations if England’s Dawid Malan, the number 1 ICC T20I batsman, stood a good chance to start for Punjab ahead of the 41-year-old.

However, the ‘Universe Boss’ hit the ground running in Punjab’s first match against the Rajasthan Royals with a quickfire innings of 40 runs from 28 balls helping the total to 221.

Once again, his inconsistency caught up as he could manage only 36 runs in the next 3 innings. But, Chris Gayle bounced back – and this time not just with the runs, but with the way he batted through the innings against a challenging Mumbai Indians bowling attack in difficult batting conditions of the Chepauk.

Chasing 132 on a sluggish track in Chennai, Chris Gayle bided his time against the likes of Rahul Chahar and Jayant Yadav, who even troubled the set batsman KL Rahul.

The West Indian took his time to gauge the conditions and come to terms with the gameplay required to succeed on it – from 3 of 10 and 8 of 14, he swiftly moved to 43 off 35 breaking his shackles to complete the chase.

KL Rahul’s side moved up to the fifth spot on the points table. They travel to Ahmedabad and will next meet the Kolkata Knight Riders on Monday.
