Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017/18: Asnodkar, Bowlers Help Goa Stun Tamil Nadu

Minnows Goa stunned a heavyweight Tamil Nadu on the second day of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2017/18 after chasing down a low total of 211 to hand TN their first defeat of the tournament.

Tamil Nadu had a great start, as openers Kaushik Gandhi and Murali Vijay did a perfect job. They both shared 89 runs for the first wicket, to lay a strong base for Tamil Nadu. Goa bounced back quickly with two wickets.

Vijay Shankar too fell soon, but Baba Aprajith helped his side to cross the 150-run mark along with Washington Sundar. Once Sundar fell on team’s score of 166, Goa bowlers gave no chance to other TN batsmen and in no time, bundled out the Vijay Shankar-led the side on 210.

At one stage, Tamil Nadu looked good for a big score Darshan Misal and Srinivas Fadte did a great job to keep Tamil Nadu on a low score.

The only way Tamil Nadu could have won the game was by chipping in with early and quick wickets. They, though, took the first wicket on 38 but had to wait for 98 runs for second success.

Opener Swapnil Asnodkar, along with Sagun Kamat – the number three batsman – propelled the score past 100 and shared a great partnership to keep Goa in the fray.

After Kamat’s dismissal, Asnodkar completed his fifth List A century and played an innings of 103 before getting dismissed.

Goa lost few wickets in the end, but it was too late for Tamil Nadu to make a comeback then. In the end, Goa had 22 balls and four wickets to spare before they posted a win over Tamil Nadu.

The star attractions of the game viz Murali Vijay and R Ashwin did well for their side tough. Vijay played an innings of 51 while R Ashwin bowled a spell of 10-2-30-2. Though their efforts could not see Tami Nadu winning their second consecutive game of the tournament.

Brief scores: Goa 211/6 (Swapnil Asnodkar 103, Sagun Kamat 38; R Ashwin 2-30) defeat Tamil Nadu 210/10 (Baba Aprajith 52, Murali Vijay 51; Darshan Misal 3-42, Srinivas Fadte 3-51) by four wickets.
