Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers are perhaps the Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi of cricket. And it is only a boon to have both the players playing for the same franchise. Virat Kohli disappointed with the bat in the eliminator of IPL 2020 against Delhi Capitals while AB de Villiers stood firm to fight for the side.
However there is a certain over reliance on the star pair in the RCB setup with opener Devdutt Padikkal being one of the exception. This has been a problem for RCB over the years as they have been over reliant on their batting unit although Mohammed Siraj and Yuzvendra Chahal have pulled off some incredible performances this season.
RCB played very good cricket, sometimes a little bit inconsistent: Brian Lara
West Indies legend Brian Lara, a part of the official broadcasters panel for IPL 2020, said that RCB have played good cricket in the season but have been inconsistent. He also mentioned that the franchise needs to reassess their over-reliance on Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers moving forward in the tournament.
“They (RCB) played very good cricket, sometimes a little bit inconsistent. They did not finish in the top 2 when they had that opportunity. I think what they have to do is just assess the situation and realise the reliance on over-reliance on Kohli and AB de Villiers has to change, moving forward,” Lara told Star Sports.
In the eliminator, asked to bat, only Aaron Finch and AB de Villiers made key contributions as RCB posted a partly total of 131/7 in the stipulated 20 overs. The chase was stiff from SRH as it went all the way to wire before they crossed the line with two balls to spare. After RCB was knocked out fans came down heavily on the poor run from the franchise over the years.
RCB has the record of reaching three finals. RCB entered the final match last time in 2016 but since then they have been at the bottom of the table. Moreover, in 2019, the franchise finished last with just 5 wins from 14 matches. There has been plenty of positives for the side this season which includes the brilliance of Devdutt Padikkal.
