Virat Kohli and his team Royal Challengers Bangalore‘s (RCB) journey in this year’s IPL ended on Tuesday although they still have a game to play which is inconsequential as far as their fate is concerned. The game against Rajasthan Royals ended in a washout, thus Royal Challengers became the first team this season to be out of the playoff race. The Royal Challengers needed to win their remaining two games to have any chance of progressing ahead but rain dashed their hopes.

And with the playoff hopes done and dusted, Royal Challengers will have to wait for at least one more year to win their first-ever IPL title. The poor run this season has also extended the franchise’s poor track record under the captaincy of Virat Kohli. Kohli took charge of the team in 2013 after the retirement of Daniel Vettori. Fast forward to 2019 and the Royal Challengers are still searching for their first IPL title.

In fact, the Bangalore-based outfit is one of the most inconsistent teams in the league in the last few years. Ever since Kohli took charge, they made it to the playoffs just once when in 2016 their skipper scored nearly 1,000 runs and led the team to the final. Their performance this year is even more disappointing. The three-time finalists began their season with six losses on the trot and are now languishing at the bottom with 9 points from 13 games.

And former India opener Gautam Gambhir has once again said that Kohli is lucky to lead the side.  Before the start of the season, Gambhir had said the same thing and has reiterated it once again.

“I’d talked about his captaincy only at IPL, not India. I’d say again that he has been very fortunate to remain RCB skipper. He is a fabulous player, best in the world, but as captain he is very fortunate. One gets seven years captaining RCB, without winning,” Gautam Gambhir said.
