Former Australian cricketer and Indian coach Greg Chappell has sung words of praises for Indian captain Virat Kohli. Greg Chappell served as the Indian coach in the past and while his tenure was controversial, the Australian laid the foundations for several young cricketers. He claimed that Virat Kohli is one of the most influential cricketers in the world and has a massive say in Indian cricket.

Virat Kohli, who will return to Indian colours in the upcoming tour of Australia for the first time in nine months, will miss three out of four Tests. That ended up creating an uproar over Australian media and former cricketers like Steve Waugh and current off-spinner Nathan Lyon expressed unhappiness over Kohli’s decision. Under the 32-year old, the men in blue won their first Test series in Australia in 2018-19.

According to Greg Chappell, not only is Virat Kohli one of the most influential cricketers today but also one of the best players. Chappell further said that Kohli has strong views about anything and is happy to put himself in the middle to back those up as well.

“I think he’s certainly one of the best players and one of the most influential players in world cricket at the moment. He has strong views, he’s quite happy to speak those views, he’s quite happy to put himself out there and back himself to back up his words,” Chappell stated as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The 72-year old went on to say that the Indian captain relishing Test cricket augurs well for Indian cricket since it will continue to respect it. Chappell mentioned that India is fortunate to have a skipper, who loves five-day games and while he cherishes donning the whites, India will play Tests.

He loves Test cricket and while he’s playing India will treat Test cricket with respect because he has a big say in Indian cricket. That’s a good thing. If you have a captain of India who is not interested in Test cricket that will impact the scene. Virat loves Test cricket, he champions Test cricket, and while that’s happening India will play Test cricket,” he added.
