Virat Kohli has been breaking and at the same time making new records for fun. The charismatic India captain already has 70 (43 in ODIs and 27 in Tests) international hundreds to his name, and with a lot of cricket still left in his career, he is being pipped as the true successor of Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar when it comes to scaling his records.

Virat Kohli is 7 ODI hundreds away from leapfrogging Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 hundreds. And, while he is certain to break that record, he is still some distance away when it comes to Test match cricket.

Will Virat be able to leapfrog his idol and ‘God of cricket’ Sachin Tendulkar by the end of his career? Former England batsman Kevin Pietersen feels it will be difficult for Virat to do so and one of the biggest deterrents in his view is injuries, the longevity of Sachin’s career, and the fact that he plays all the three formats of the game.

Virat may be physically very feet but given the fact that he is so passionate on a cricket field and mentally so driven, there are possibilities of him getting drained out, something that Pietersen also alluded to.

It’s difficult because of injury, the longevity of Tendulkar’s career. Tendulkar wasn’t as emotional when he was in the field and he did not carry the same sort of aggressive attitude on the field. He was a lot more relaxed. It depends on how long Virat Kohli continues to play,” Kevin Pietersen told Times Now.

Kevin Pietersen also touched upon the fact that Virat has a lot more workload to deal with since he plays all the three formats of the game including the Indian Premier League, something Sachin didn’t have to deal with for a major part of his career.

“Remember, Kohli plays all three forms of the game, plus he plays the IPL. For the majority of Sachin Tendulkar’s career, there was no T20 cricket and there was no IPL. So it all depends on how long Kohli plays for,” Pietersen added.
