Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, or Kane Williamson? Who is the best batsman across all formats of the game in the modern era? The debate is a never-ending one and it continues to rage on as former and current cricketers continue to have their say on it.

Virat Kohli, Steve Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson are part of the ‘Fab-4’- a select group of the modern-day batsman, who has excelled in all formats of the game. But, who is the best among the best?

Angelo Matthews, former Sri Lankan captain, was asked the same question during a recent interaction with Anis Sajan.

And, the right-hander went on to choose Indian superstar Virat amongst the four legendary cricketers. Matthews feels that Kohli is the most consistent batsman after his former captain Kumar Sangakkara.

“I would go with Virat Kohli as he is one of the most consistent after (Kumar) Sangakkara.”

If you talk about statistical comparisons, Virat Kohli is daylights ahead of his contemporaries in white-ball cricket. The current Indian captain is the fastest to scale Mt.10000 runs in ODI cricket and has the second-most hundreds in the history of the 50-over game [43] after his idol Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar [49].

In T2OI cricket too, Kohli is way ahead of the likes of Smith, Williamson, and Root. Kohli is the leading run-scorer in T20I cricket and was the ‘Player of the Tournament’ in the last two T20 World Cups.
