Veteran Indian batsman Wasim Jaffer became the first player in the history of the Ranji Trophy to feature in 150 matches when he took the field for Vidarbha against Andhra in their 2019/20 Ranji opener. Jaffer was already the highest-capped player in the competition’s history with 149 appearances before today.

Currently, Wasim Jaffer is one of the longest-tenured cricketers in Indian cricket history. He is 41-years old and is still going strong in the domestic circuit. Wasim Jaffer geared up for defending champions Vidarbha and made history by playing against Andhra Pradesh, his 150th appearance in a Ranji Trophy game.

Apart from the latest record, Wasim Jaffer boasts of several other records to his name as well. Last year, he became the first batsman to score 11000 runs in the history of the Ranji Trophy. And also, he notched up his 40th Ranji century last season, setting another record in the process.

The Mumbai-born batsman has played a total of 253 first-class matches, scoring 19,147 runs, averaging 51.19. He has represented India in 31 Tests, and 2 ODIs. Jaffer has 40 tons to his name in his Ranji career and has amassed 11,775 runs.

In the list of most appearances in Ranji Trophy, Jaffer is followed by Devendra Bundela and Amol Muzumdar, who have 145 appearances and 136 appearances in the Ranji Trophy. He played a starring role for Vidarbha throughout the 2018/19 season, finishing the competition as their highest run-getter with 1037 runs from 15 innings.

Jaffer’s 150th Ranji match’s start was delayed after a snake entered the Dr Gokaraju Liala Gangaaraju ACA Cricket Ground on Monday morning. Getting into the details of the game, Vidarbha skipper Faiz Fazal won the toss and elected to field first. Andhra were rolled out for 211 runs on the board. Skipper Hanuma Vihari was the top scorer with 83 runs.

For Vidarbha, Aditya Sarwate was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets while Rajneesh Gurbani picked three wickets. Yash Thakur chipped in with a couple of wickets while Lalit Yadav bagged one wicket. At the end of Day 1, Vidarbha scored 26/0 in 12 overs.
