Just when it looked like Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli would bat India to a position of strength, England clawed their way back by dismissing the latter and his deputy Ajinkya Rahane in quick succession.

Pujara and Kohli had batted India out of trouble after the visitors lost both their openers – KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan – with only 50 on the board. The duo added 92 runs for the third wicket before Sam Curran accounted for Kohli who scored 46. And 19 runs later Ben Stokes accounted for Ajinkya Rahane with a ripper of a delivery to trap him lbw.

The on-field did not hesitate much in raising his finger only to see Rahane reviewing the decision. And as soon as the replays came on, controversy surrounded the dismissal as Stokes’ front foot had landed very close to the line. There were doubts over the delivery’s legitimacy.

But umpire Joel Wilson was convinced that Stokes had some heel behind when his toes hit the turf. Consequently, he gave his decision in the favour of Stokes. As far as the delivery was concerned, it was spot on. Stokes’ searing inswinger was hitting the top of leg stump. Rahane could not pick it up and fell over while playing across it.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:
