Comical run-out and Pakistan cricket are perhaps a match made in heaven and it looks like the future won’t be an exception either. In the past, one has seen a number of instances when Pakistan cricketers messed up while taking runs and their U19 players are pretty much on the same path.
On Tuesday, Pakistan U19 batsmen Qasim Akram and Rohail Nazir were involved in a baffling run-out during the high-voltage clash against India in the semifinal of the ongoing U19 World Cup. The run-out happened in the 31st over when spinner Ravi Bishnoi was bowling. On the third ball of the over, Qasim Akram tapped the delivery in front of the cover.
Initially, both the batsmen set off for the single before showing hesitation after getting almost half way down the pitch. And to everyone’s surprise, both the batsmen then decided to go for the same end – the non-striker’s end. In the end, Rohail Nazir won the race but lost his partner as Qasim Akram departed for just 9.
Atharva Ankolekar collected the ball and threw it to wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel who made no mistake in taking off the bails. Rohail went on to smash a fighting fifty but it did not stop India from bowling out Pakistan for a modest total of 172. Pakistan’s decision to bat first after winning the toss could not be justified by their batsmen.
Apart from Rohail, opening batsman Haider Ali scored a fifty too but the other batsmen failed to get going as Pakistan were all out for a below par total. Other than Rohail and Haider, only Mohammad Haris managed to cross the double-digit mark with the bat. For India, Sushant Mishra picked up three wickets while Kartik Tyagi and Bishnoi picked up two wickets each.
Here is the video of that run-out:
