Just when it looked AB de Villiers is set for a big knock, debutant Jasprit Bumrah marked his arrival in Test cricket by making the Proteas star his first Test wicket in the ongoing game at Newlands Stadium.

After being asked to bowl first, Bhuvneshwar Kumar gave the visitors a flying start by running riot at the start. The right-arm pacer sent back South Africa’s top-three – Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, and Hashim Amla- with just 12 runs on the board. However, de Villiers, playing his first five-day Test in nearly two years, launched a stunning counterattack to ease the pressure on his side. By the time the lunch was taken, he was batting on 59 off just 65 balls.

But just when it seemed the former South Africa skipper was in the mood, he was undone by a Bumrah delivery. The debutant bowled a fuller length around the off stump, making de Villiers go for the drive. But in doing so, de Villiers left a big gap between bat and body. The ball took a thin edge of the bat before going on to shatter the stumps as India made a fine start to the post-launch session. The wicket also broke the 114-run stand between de Villiers and Faf du Plessis.
