The way Dawid Malan and Jonny Bairstow were going in the ongoing Perth Test, it needed a moment of brilliance from Australia to break the huge partnership and the moment was provided by none other than Peter Handscomb who was dropped from the playing eleven for the ongoing game.

The pair were united at the crease on day one when England were reeling at 131 for 4. They were welcomed with a hostile period of short-pitched bowling from Australia’s pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins but managed to cling on and reaped the rewards after that. The duo went on to share a record 174-run stand which was England’s best Ashes stand in Australia since the second Test of their victorious 2010-11 campaign as England finished on a strong 305 for 4. At stumps, Malan was on 110 and Bairstow was unbeaten on 75.

The duo cautiously began the second day, playing out four consecutive overs before taking their chances. They soon completed the 200-run stand while Bairstow went on to complete his maiden ton against Australia. With both the players not giving the hosts any chance of clawing their way back into the game, things were looking pretty tough for Steve Root and his men before Malan decided to loft Nathan Lyon against the turn. But in doing so, he ended up top-edging the ball. But it initially looked the England batsman would get away as the ball was looking primed to land in the no man’s land towards point. However, Peter Handscomb, who was in the field as a substitute fielder, came running in from the left side and made a full-length dive to complete a stunning grab.

Here is a clip of that stunning catch:

Malan, meanwhile, scored 140 with the help of 19 fours and a six. England were 368 for five after the left-handed batsman’s dismissal.
