Former India captain MS Dhoni had left many surprised last year by deciding to go to Jammu and Kashmir to serve the Indian Army. An honorary lieutenant colonel in the Territorial Army, MS Dhoni had joined the Army troops in the militancy-infested south Kashmir region on July 30 to carry out patrolling, guard duties and similar responsibilities just like other soldiers.

He took the decision right after the World Cup ended in July. The legendary wicketkeeper-batsman enjoyed a brief stint with the Indian Army’s Parachute Regiment from July 31 to August 15 in the forward locations in Kashmir Valley. The veteran cricket star stayed with his 106 TA Battalion (Para) and his unit was deployed in the militancy-infested south Kashmir region as part of Victor Force.

During his posting, MS Dhoni had performed the duties of patrolling and guard and stayed with the troops in the camps. The cricketer was trained as a paratrooper and had previously jumped from an aircraft as well which was part of his training.

MS Dhoni last played a competitive game in July last year during the World Cup semifinal and took a sabbatical after that. His sabbatical would have ended in this year’s IPL but the tournament has been suspended indefinitely due to the pandemic.
