India’s hopes of winning the ongoing first Test against South Africa in Cape Town was dealt a huge blow after Vernon Philander dismissed Virat Kohli in the second innings.

India had given themselves a huge chance by dismissing the hosts for just 130, thus needing 208 to go one nil up in the series. However, South Africa clawed their way back into the game by taking three quick wickets and reducing the visitors to 39 for 3. But before the hosts could make further inroads, Kohli and Rohit Sharma steadied the ship. The duo was looking well settled and had added 32 runs for the fourth wicket to stop the rot.

However, just when it looked like the duo are set for a special partnership, Kohli was dismissed by Philander against the run of play.  In an attempt to flick a fuller length delivery, Kohli shuffled across the stumps. However, the ball swung in slightly at the very last moment and went on to evade the bat and hit the pad. Umpire Michael Gough did not have any hesitation in raising his finger while Philander was so confident of the wicket that he did not even look back and ran towards his teammates to celebrate. Kohli reviewed the decision immediately only to find out the on-field umpire was right.

Here is a clip of that dismissal:
