Watch: Virat Kohli Snaps At Reporter During The Press Conference
Disappointed after the heavy loss in the second Test against South Africa, Team India captain Virat Kohli, on Wednesday (January 17) lost his cool and snapped at a journalist during a fiery media session.
Kohli was addressing the media after India lost the second Test by 135 runs and also conceded the series. The defeat brought an end to Kohli’s winning run as skipper. Before the ongoing series, India had not lost a series under Kohli, registering nine consecutive series wins. However, Kohli & Co. could not replicate those performances against the Proteas, losing the series-opener by 72 runs before conceding the second game by 135 runs.
India were thoroughly outplayed in the second Test. Chasing 287, India were all out for just 151. The performance have once again raised a question on another Indian team’s potential to perform overseas. However, when one of the journalists asked the 29-year old about fielding the best possible playing XI and his team’s overseas record, he did not hesitate in giving him a piece of his mind.
“You spoke about it not coming together well – has that maybe been because of the chopping and changing of selection? In over 30 Tests that you have been captain, you have changed your starting line-up in each and every Test you have played? To win Test matches you need consistency, and you have been lacking that part. What would you put that down to, and how would you say that you will continue changing your team and still expect different results?,” the journalist asked.
In reply, a combative Kohli said:
“How many Test matches have we won out of 34?”
The journalist was also not ready to back down and went on to ask:
“In how many have you changed the XI?”
Kohli retaliated by saying:
“How many have we won? How many have we won? 21 wins. Two losses (five). How many draws?”
The journalist then indirectly took a dig at India’s abilities to perform overseas by asking:
“How many in India?”
The India batting star then countered by saying that place does not matter if a team won a Test and went on to an end to the argument.
“Does it matter? Wherever we play we try to do our best. I’m here to answer your questions, not to fight with you,” Kohli said.
