IND vs SL 2017: “We wanted to bowl first, but India batted really well”- Thisara Perera
India defeated Sri Lanka by 93 runs in the first T20I and took a 1-0 lead in the three-match T20 series at the Barabati stadium in Cuttack. The Indian spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav decimated the Sri Lankan batting line up as they picked up six wickets combined. Chahal was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets giving away just 23 runs in his quota of four overs.
Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field as India brought in KL Rahul and Jaydev Unadkat for the first T20I. India scored 180/3 in their 20 overs. Rahul was the top scorer for the hosts, scoring 61 runs off 48 deliveries while opening the innings. Shreyas Iyer and Rohit Sharma scored 24 and 17 respectively. MS Dhoni and Manish Pandey scored 39 and 32 respectively.
The Sri Lankan batting was a total failure as they failed to make use of the dew and wet ball and could only score 87 runs and were dismissed in just 16 overs. Upul Tharanga was the top scorer with 23 runs. Kusal Perera was the next best with 19 but took 28 runs to score these runs.
Here is what Sri Lanka’s captain Thisara Perera said at the post-match presentation.
“In these conditions, we wanted to bowl first, but India batted really well. And we have to give their bowlers credit, two spinners bowling really well in dewy conditions. We could have had a shot at 160-170 here. But I think, 180, in these conditions, we could have chased if we had got a good start. But our batting line-up didn’t click. Really disappointed. We are working hard at practice, to handle the wristspinners. These are the best 15 we have so we have to stand up and do the job next match”
