England fast-bowler Jofra Archer is facing severe criticism for breaching his team’s ‘bio-security protocols’. England dramatically announced that the fast bowler had been left out of their side for the second Test against West Indies just hours before play got underway at Old Trafford on Thursday.

The Barbados-born star has now undertaken a mandatory five days of isolation and will undergo two COVID-19 tests in this period, which have to test negative before his self-isolation period is lifted. Reports in England suggest that he could also face suspension for his actions.

Why did Jofra Archer breach the protocol:

While ECB confirmed that the bowler would miss the second Test for breaking the protocols, it did not reveal the other details. Reports in England, however, have shed light on the same.

The Guardian and The Daily Mail have reported that the pacer didn’t directly go from Southampton (the venue of the first Test) to Manchester (the venue of the second Test) but decided to take a detour to visit his home.

As per the protocols, the players and staff are supposed to only stop at the designated stations during their travels. While all other members of the team followed the rules, Jofra Archer did not. He reportedly went to his home in Sussex where he is said to have met his girlfriend.

The 25-year-old stayed there for an hour or so before driving to Manchester to join the rest of his teammates. Although the person he met with has been tested negative for the novel coronavirus, the meeting is considered a breach of ECB’s bio-security protocols as per which no person (a part of the series) is supposed to meet an outsider.

A report in The Sun, however, claims that Jofra Archer had taken the detour not to meet his girlfriend but his dog. The media outlet confirmed the same with the cricketer’s friends.

How did the breach emerge:

Jofra Archer reportedly kept his action under the wrap and did not reveal it to the authorities. The breach only emerged when the fast bowler mentioned it in conversation with a member of England’s management on Wednesday after the squad for Thursday’s second Test had already been named.

The staff member immediately reported the bowler to England team director Ashley Giles and chief medical officer Nick Peirce before the World Cup-winner was placed in isolation.
