The India women’s cricket team progressed to their maiden final in the Women’s T20 World Cup after their semi-final against England at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) was washed out without a ball being bowled.

With no reserve day allotted, India entered the final as they topped their group, by maintaining a clean record in the preliminary stage of the tournament.

India will face the winners from the second semi-final between South Africa and Australia in the final of the tournament.

With the second semi-final, slated to take place at the same venue, later this evening it also expected to be a washed out match. In that case, South Africa will enter the final, as they had a better record in the group stage of the tournament.

England skipper Heather Knight displayed her agony and frustration after the match was washed out. She did not want her side to be knocked out in this manner, adding, it would have been great if there was a provision for reserve day.

“Frustrating, didn’t want the World Cup to end this way but not much you can do about this. Would have been good to have a reserve day perhaps. That loss to South Africa cost us. Not really, we expected to reach the semi-finals and that we did. Undone by the weather. Did feel like we had started to gain momentum in recent games and we were really ready for this semifinal,” she said at the post-match interview.

“It is unfortunate not to get a game due to the weather. But that’s how the rules go. In future, it would be nice to have a reserve day. From day one, we knew that we have to win all the games because if in case we don’t get any play in the semifinals, it will be hard for us,” India captain Harmanpreet Kaur said.

The final will be played on March 8 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
