Perhaps, Mahendra Singh Dhoni had the most exceptional cricketing career for Team India, unlike any other individual in the world cricket. He was the regular member of the squad owing to the enormous success rate. Meanwhile, the competitors for the wicketkeeper’s role faced many frustrating moments despite performing hard in the domestic circuit which included Wriddhiman Saha over national call-up.
Well, MS Dhoni has not been only a consistent run-scorer but also the fittest person in the team. All those exceptional qualities of the former skipper of India halted the chances of the wicketkeepers during his era.
It is important not to get demoralised: Wriddhiman Saha
Speaking of the same, Saha reiterated the wicketkeepers of Dhoni’s era have consistently scored runs in the domestic circuit.
However, he felt that it was their job to knock the runs and leave it to the selectors.
Further, he added it was vital for them not to get demoralised as they already knew that they are competing with a player who is immovable from the team.
However, Saha said that he never lost hope of playing for India.
”Who doesn’t want to play for India? When Dhoni was playing for India and we were playing domestic cricket, we focused on our performances, as boring as it may sound. All of us try equally, we try and be the best we can be for our state sides or IPL teams or clubs, that would catch the attention,” Saha said to Cricbuzz.
”It is important in such situations, especially when you have someone as successful and immovable as Dhoni at the top. It is key to not lose your head when selected or get demoralised when dropped. I don’t keep an eye on others’ scores,” he added.
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Wridhhiman Saha opened together for a club:
There is an astonishing fact shared by the both which is known by only a few people.
Want to know? Yes, Dhoni and Saha played for the same club in 2005 and opened the innings together.
”Mahendra Singh Dhoni had come for a club tournament [P Sen Trophy] to play for Shyambazar Club. I had been opening for them in the previous few league games. MS then joined us and he opened with me, err… I opened with him. I remember Dhoni scoring a 200 in one game, 100 in some other, he bowled in those games too,” Saha recalled.
”I was keeping but I can’t remember the year though [2005]. This was after Dhoni had announced himself already on the international scene, he had already scored that 183 [versus Sri Lanka],” he remarked.
All in all, it was a tough ride for Wriddhiman Saha as far as his international career is concerned. However, he has been exceptional in the domestic circuit and plied his trade well in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Currently, he is in the rehab period after undergoing shoulder surgery in England.
