Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) has sought help from the supreme governing body of cricket International Cricket Council (ICC) to release pending salaries of players.
Zimbabwe decided to take the matter with ICC to subdue wages of players and staff on a fast track basis. The Board has already confirmed this move on Tuesday (July 24) following the meeting.
Earlier, Zimbabwe failed to release the salaries to fulfill the commitment of releasing the wages by July 25.
They have worked out an interim with the ICC to “fast-track exceptional payment specifically for staff and players.”
Commitment to pay salaries:
“When the commitment to pay the salaries and match fees was made. ZC was not aware of the stringent measures that the ICC would introduce as part of the controlled spending . It has slowed down the release of expected funds,” the board said in a release while “apologizing unreservedly” to the affected.
Simultaneously, it forced Zimbabwe to name somewhat an inexperienced squad as their five men decided not to play.
The principal members of Zimbabwe Cricket – Brendan Taylor, Sikandar Raza, Graeme Cremer, Sean Williams and Craig Ervine – ‘remained unavailable’ due to non-payment.
Subsequently, it includes their salaries of two months and match fees of over a year.
Depleted squad for tri-series
Zimbabwe hosted a tri-nation series which included Pakistan and Australia. They were so forced to go without their key players as they also hosted a five-matches series against the Men in Green.
The details of payment:
In the next 48 hours, the exact details of salary and timings of the payment will be absolved. This came after Zimbabwe asked ICC for the help.
“While we are encouraged by this development, we understand the full impact that this late payment has on staff and players. And their ability to pay their accounts, landlords and the like,” release maintained.
