Rohit Sharma has upgraded himself in the test cricket after being promoted up the order and it has extracted the best out of him in the longest format. Rohit Sharma finished as the highest run-scoring opener in the World Test Championship with 1030 runs in 11 tests at a stunning average of 64.37.  He scored four centuries and two half-centuries in the tournament on the whole and was happy to take the attack to the bowlers most often.

This was the start of the era for Rohit Sharma as an opener in tests in the first match of the three-match home series against South Africa. India won the toss and elected to bat in the Vishakapatnam pitch which was a belter for batting. The opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Mayank Agarwal yielded 317 runs and Rohit scored 176 of those.

He scored in a very quick time with 23 fours and six sixes in the innings and it never looked like his first innings as an opener in tests. He continued his rich form into the second innings again with a 127 run knock in just 149 balls. He made merry of the South African bowler who had no answers to his assault and helped India win the game by a massive margin of 203 runs.

It wasn’t easy for the batsmen and the England spinners kept taking wickets. Rohit and Rahane stitched a 162 run partnership and Rohit kept playing the sweep shots to perfection.

He was dismissed for 161 in the end and he deserved a century for the way he stepped up to the occasion and used his feet against the spinners in a tough wicket. It needed a special inning to get some momentum as India had lost the first test and were already on the back foot. Rohit’s innings comprised of 18 fours and two sixes and it was sheer class from the Mumbaikar.
