New Zealand managed to break their jinx of not winning an ICC title for a long time as they won the inaugural edition of the World Test Championship finals against India. New Zealand managed to take a decisive lead in the first innings which proved to be very crucial in the context of the final.

The Indian batsman had to apply themselves out there in the middle as it was very tough batting conditions but no Indian batsman scored a half-century in the test which showed the lack of match practice. With the New Zealand team deserving to win the trophy, it is time to look at the team-wise player with the best average in the world test championship.

Bangladesh – Tamim Iqbal

The Bangladesh batting sensation Tamim Iqbal just played five Tests in the World Test Championship and he kept contributing with four half-centuries despite not getting a century. The 32-year-old scored 420 runs in the tournament at an average of 46.66 which is the highest from his country in the World Test Championship. The elegant left-hander was recently appointed the skipper of the Bangladesh ODI team.

West Indies – Kyle Mayers

Kyle Mayer will always be remembered for his famous unbeaten double-century knock against Bangladesh on debut while chasing down a mammoth score in the fourth innings. Mayers played 6 tests in the World Test Championship scoring 521 runs at an average of 47.36. Mayers along with his double century has hit two fifties so far and he is expected to become an integral part of the test side in the future.

Sri Lanka – Dananjaya De Silva

The Sri Lankan all-rounder Dananjaya De Silva had an excellent tournament scoring 653 runs in 9 Tests at an average of 59.36. He hit two half-centuries and three centuries in the World Test Championship along with his famous partnership alongside Dimuth Karunaratne against Bangladesh. The off-spinner has shown a lot of composure and technique so far in his short stint.

Pakistan – Babar Azam

Babar Azam is one of the best players going around in the world at the moment and it is not a surprise that he holds the best average among the Pakistan batsman in the World Test Championship. Babar Azam scored 932 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 66.57 which is the second-best in the tournament overall. He has scored four centuries and five half-centuries in the process which shows his consistency levels too.

South Africa – Dean Elgar

The newly-appointed South African test skipper Dean Elgar has the best average among his country batsmen in the World Test Championship. Elgar scored 935 runs in 13 Tests at an average of 42.50 and finished with two centuries and four half-centuries in the tournament. The left-hander is a vital cog at the top of the order for the Proteas in tests and he can also bowl some useful left-arm spin.

England – Joe Root

The England test skipper Joe Root finished as the second-highest run-getter in the World Test Championship with 1660 runs in 20 tests. His average of 47.42 is the best among the English batsmen who played the tournament and he scored three centuries alongside eight half-centuries in the tournament. Root scored two double centuries this year but couldn’t take his team to the finals.

The Australian batsman Marnus Labschagne is one of the best batters in test cricket in the world at the moment and he is a prolific run-scorer. Labuschagne finished as the top run-getter in the tournament with 1675 runs from 13 tests and also his average of 72.82 in the World Test Championship is the best among the overall batsmen. He scored five centuries and nine half-centuries to keep piling up runs for his nation especially in the red-ball format.

India – Rohit Sharma

The hitman Rohit Sharma has proved to be a great opener in tests in the limited opportunities he has got and is expected to get a long shot too. Rohit was India’s second-highest run-scorer in the tournament with 1094 runs in 12 tests. His average of 60.77 is the highest by any Indian batsmen in the tournament and he also scored four centuries in the process.

New Zealand – Kane Williamson

Kane Williamson finished as the leader of the title-winning team of New Zealand in the final and he has been in excellent touch in the World Test Championship. Williamson scored 918 runs in 10 Tests at an average of 61.20 which is the best among the New Zealand batsmen and he even got to the top of the ICC test rankings for batsmen with his brilliant double hundred recently.
