As the rivals prepare to face off in the second Test at Kensington Oval later on Wednesday, West Indies all-rounder Jason Holder has revived the topic of England cricketers demonstrating “disrespect” to his side in the final session of play during the drawn first Test in Antigua.
Former West Indian all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite accused England skipper Joe Root of dishonouring the home side after he played until the five balls remained when it was no longer mathematical terms possible to take six wickets, on the day the first Test ended in a tame draw at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
Set an extraordinary victory goal of 286, and facing serious straits at 4/67 at the start of the final session, Bonner and Holder fought England bowlers for more than two hours in an unbroken fifth-wicket partnership of 80 off 35 overs to see the hosts to safety at 4/147. Both devoured over 100 deliveries, leaving England’s bowlers unhappy.
On Day 5, with only five deliveries of Jack Leach’s last over remaining — and with taking six wickets statistically impossible — Root proposed to shake hands with rival team captain Kriagg Brathwaite to call the playoff.
Root should have accepted the draw far faster, as per Carlos Brathwaite, but the England captain continued to bat until there were only five balls left.
Carlos Brathwaite described the series environment as “excellent”:
The atmosphere created by the series, according to West Indies skipper Brathwaite, made it special. “This series is always distinct from the rest of our catalogue. It is always full of enthusiasm, which can sometimes encourage men”
At the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, the hosts securely batted out the final day of the first Test, resulting in a tie.
Holder stated that the hosts were more motivated for the final two Tests as they seek to extend their excellent home record against England.
