Founded in the year 1985, the Himachal Pradesh cricket team has been playing in the Ranji Trophy since 1985-86 season. They did not have a promising start in the Ranji Trophy. In 1985-86 and 1987-88 seasons, Himachal Pradesh cricket team lost all five of its matches by an innings.
The Himachal Pradesh cricket team won a game in the Ranji Trophy for the first time in 1990-91 season with a thrilling one-wicket win over Services. Later in 2006-07 season, Himachal Pradesh won the Plate Group of the Ranji Trophy with a win over Odisha in the final.
