Bangladesh Squad For ICC World Cup 2023 Announced, Tamim Iqbal Left Out

On Tuesday, September 26, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) finally announced a 15-man squad of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 is the 13th edition of the 50-over Cricket World Cup, which is scheduled to be held from October 5 to November 19 in India.

A total of 10 teams will take part in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. India, South Africa, Pakistan, Afghanistan, England, Australia, New Zealand, and Bangladesh qualified on the basis of Cricket World Cup Super League standings while Sri Lanka and the Netherlands qualified for the event after the ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

The marquee tournament is set to be played across 12 different venues in the country. Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, Chennai, Delhi, Dharamsala, Mumbai, Pune, Guwahati, and Thiruvananthapuram are the 12 venues for matches. Guwahati and Thiruvananthapuram will only host warm-up matches.

Bangladesh Squad For The ICC World Cup 2023 Announced

Ahead of the squad announcement, reports emerged in Bangladesh media that claimed that Shakib Al Hasan threatened to step down as captain and not participate in the tournament if half-fit players were selected.

Shakib was talking about Tamim Iqbal, who had informed the BCB that he would not be able to play more than 5 matches due to his fitness issues. In the end, the decision was made by BCB to leave Tamim Iqbal out of the squad.

Meanwhile, BCB took to their social media handles to announce the squad for the World Cup and unveil their jersey for the competition. The Bangladesh squad will be led by regular skipper Shakib Al Hasan with Litton Das serving as deputy.

The Bangladesh squad also has many experienced campaigners like Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah Riyad, who will be aiming to deliver good performances in the World Cup in India. Notably, Mahmudullah was not included in the Asia Cup 2023 squad, and just recently he was recalled for New Zealand ODIs, following which he was selected for the World Cup.

The Bangla Tigers recently took part in a three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home. The first match of the series was washed out due to rain and the the Kiwis registered a comprehensive 86-run win in the second game. In the third ODI, the Bangla Tigers faced a crushing 7-wicket loss to lose the series.

Ahead of the New Zealand series, Bangladesh took part in the Asia Cup 2023, where they won one game in the group stage against Afghanistan and one game against India in the Super Four stage.

The Bangla Tigers will begin their World Cup journey in India with two warm-up matches against Sri Lanka on September 29 and England on October 2 in Guwahati. Their first match of the competition will be against Afghanistan on October 7 in Dharamsala.
