Former South African cricketer Jacques Kallis backed Indian batter Shubman Gill to be the young player of the ICC World Cup 2023. He said that the batter is one of his favourite players and is looking forward to him having a good tournament.

The ICC World Cup 2023 is around the corner as the tournament will begin on 5th October in India. There will be quite a few players to watch out for and one among them surely will be young Indian batter Shubman Gill.

Shubman Gill has developed himself into one of the finest batters in just a short span of time. The batter has replaced Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian ODI setup, which speaks a lot about his calibre and talent as a batter. Since the last few months, he has been the best batter in his team and has played many fantastic knocks.

Jacques Kallis was asked whom he feels will be the best young player in the ICC World Cup 2023. The Proteas all-rounder didn’t shy away from naming Shubman Gill. Hailing him as a great talent, he said that he was fortunate enough to work with him during his stint with KKR.

Speaking to ICC, he explained: “For me, the young player of the World Cup will be Shubman Gill. What a talent, not much more needs to be said about him, except to think I was going to enjoy watching him bat. One of my favourite players to watch.

“I was lucky enough to work with him at KKR and see him develop, looking forward to seeing him have a good World Cup.”

Notably, Jacques Kallis was the batting consultant for Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL from 2015 to 2019. Shubman Gill played under him as well. The batter spent four years with KKR before moving to Gujarat Titans in 2022.

Shubman Gill will be next seen in action during the upcoming Asia Cup 2023, to be played from 30th August to 17th September. The batter will be a vital cog in the wheel for the team in the tournament and it’ll also be a great opportunity for him to prepare for the ICC World Cup 2023.

Shubman Gill will be playing the first game against Pakistan on 2nd September. He has been a prolific run-getter for India in the ODIs this year. The right-hander has scored 750 runs in 12 games he has played this year at an average of around 70. Not only this he has smashed 2 half-centuries and three centuries, which includes one double hundred as well.
