Ashwin has come in as a replacement for the injured left-arm spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel. Axar had suffered a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup 2023 Super Four clash against Bangladesh and he has failed.
The 29-year-old was expected to recover in time for the marquee tournament and he was also selected in the squad for the third match of the recently concluded three-match ODI series against the Australia National Cricket Team. However, the spin-bowling all-rounder was ruled out of the third ODI match against Australia and now he will miss the World Cup as well.
Ravichandran Ashwin Replaces Axar Patel As India’s Final World Cup Squad Announced
The veteran off-spinner Ashwin, who has bagged 155 wickets in ODIs, was picked for the Australia ODIs alongside Washington Sundar as India wanted to have a back-up ready after Axar got injured.
Ashwin played the first two games of the series for India after making a comeback to the format after 20-plus months and registered figures of 1/47 and 3/41. He was replaced by Washington Sundar in the third game and the young all-rounder scored 18 and had the bowling figures of 0/48.
Now, India will be heading into the World Cup with three different kinds of spin bowlers in the team with Ashwin offering his off-spin, Ravindra Jadeja bringing in left-arm spin variation and Kuldeep Yadav offering his left-arm wrist-spin. Also, Ravichandran Ashwin and Virat Kohli are the two players in the Indian World Cup 2023 squad, who were part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2011 squad that won the title in India.
India will begin their World Cup campaign on October 8 against Australia in Chennai. Before the tournament, India will play two warm-ups, the first against England on September 30 and the next against the Netherlands on 3 October.
