Suryakumar Yadav’s ODI form improved a lot in the ODI series against Australia. He scored consecutive fifties and held himself from depending on sweep shots.

The past few months were tough for Suryakumar Yadav as an ODI batter because he was constantly failing to score runs. When India played Australia in a bilateral series in March 2023, Suryakumar Yadav got out on three consecutive ducks. His performance put his World Cup selection in jeopardy but the team management showed faith in his abilities.

Suryakumar Yadav scored 50 off 49 deliveries in the first ODI and 72 off 37 in the second ODI, it was after one and a half years that Yadav scored a half-century in the ODI format.

It might have been a good morale boost for him but still, he has to prove a lot in ODIs to be a regular member of the playing XI in ODIs. Sunil Gavaskar shared his views on Suryakumar Yadav getting playing XI and he was skeptical about Surya’s place in the XI.

“Suryakumar hasn’t done anything big yet in ODI cricket. He only bats in those final 15-20 overs where he utilizes his T20 abilities which undoubtedly is important as well. But Hardik, Ishan, and Rahul can all do that same job as well. So Iyer is confirmed for No. 4. Suryakumar will have to wait and if he does get a chance at No. 4 he has to score a big hundred and show that he can also score a ton as well,” said Gavaskar.

Suryakumar Yadav’s Problem In ODI Cricket

ODIs are a tricky format, you have to keep up with the run rate as well as protect yourself from getting out. One of the major tricks to be good in this format is strike rotation. Suryakumar Yadav is not very good when it comes to rotating the strike, too much dependency on boundaries for scoring runs is his issue. In ODIs, you cannot depend on the boundaries too much as you have to bat for longer periods and dependency on boundaries means taking more risks.

Suryakumar Yadav has to improve his strike rotation and find some shots that will get him singles and doubles to keep the scoreboard ticking. This is one of the skills mastered by Virat Kohli who not only finds the gap for boundaries but also singles and doubles.
