The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 Event Technical Committee has approved Cameron Green as a replacement for Josh Inglis in Australia’s squad.

Green, who has seven T20Is under his belt, was named as a replacement after Inglis was ruled out due to a right-hand injury that necessitated surgery.

Even though it didn’t go as planned, Cameron Green is now a member of Australia’s World Cup team.

The defending T20 champions will take a chance by entering the competition without a backup keeper after selecting Green, an all-rounder with great potential in white-ball cricket but limited experience in the shortest format, to replace Josh Inglis due to injury.

At Australia’s training session on Thursday at the SCG, Inglis had a bandaged right hand following a dreadfully unlucky golf accident that required more than a dozen stitches. While the wicketkeeper was not scheduled to play in Saturday’s game-opening match against New Zealand, his adaptability as a reserve meant his absence left the Australians with a difficult call.

On impact, the handle of the wicketkeeper’s six-iron club broke while he was playing at New South Wales Golf Club on Wednesday morning.

Cameron Green has performed admirably as an opening batsman in recent games:

By selecting Cameron Green, who has performed well as the opener in recent games and whose 140kph seamers from his immense 198cm frame give him an extra point of differentiation, Australia has essentially taken a chance that first-choice keeper Matthew Wade won’t sustain an injury on game day.

Given that ICC rules forbid players from outside the squad from being replaced on the day of a game, Australia would have to give the gloves to one of the 15 players already on the team if that were to occur.

In recent weeks, Australia has given Cameron Green playing time to make sure he will be available as a backup for fellow seam-bowling all-rounders Marcus Stoinis and Mitch Marsh, who have both only recently returned from injuries.

Just before Australia’s series against India last month, Green had no experience playing in an international T20 tournament. However, he smashed two half-centuries at strike rates of around 200 to show his immense possibilities in the shortest format.

Australia squad: Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Tim David, Aaron Finch (c), Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, Mitchell Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Kane Richardson, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Marcus Stoinis, Matthew Wade, David Warner, Adam Zampa
