As the hosts get ready to meet a rejuvenated Sri Lanka, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh indicated on Monday that Australia will stick with the 11 players that were humbled in their T20 World Cup opener against New Zealand.
After one game, Australia’s title defense is on thin ice after being bowled out for 111 and losing by 89 runs in Sydney on Saturday.
Some commentators had urged Australia to implement adjustments for the next Super 12 game against previous champions Sri Lanka in Perth on Tuesday since batsman Steve Smith and all-arounder Cameron Green were on reserve in the squad.
Marsh, however, assured that the players would be given a chance to recover.
Western Australian Mitchell Marsh told reporters in Perth, “To my knowledge, we’ll be playing the same 11 (and) hopefully stay the course.”
“The nature of the tournament, you lose one game, your back is up against the wall and we know what’s in front of us now.”
“I think what’s important for us is to not look too far ahead. We’ve got Sri Lanka tomorrow night. That’s all that matters for us.”
“Once we get on a roll we’re going to be very hard to stop” – Mitchell Marsh
Australia hopes to restart its season with a victory over the defending Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka.
Early in the tournament, the hosts are in a difficult position regarding their spot in the last four because fellow group members New Zealand and favourites England have already made their imprint.
Mitchell Marsh predicted that if Australia finds its rhythm, it will be a challenging team to play against:
“I think that we have a lot of confidence that once we get on a roll we’re going to be very hard to stop. We had so much cricket in the lead-up to the game, we had guys in and out, it was all about building to the World Cup.”
We didn’t start well but we have great self-belief. We know our best is the best in the world,” Mitchell Marsh Added.
At the Optus Stadium in Perth on Tuesday, October 25, Australia will play Sri Lanka in their second group-stage match.
