Parthiv Patel, a former wicket-keeper for India, thinks Mohammed Shami will be a valuable addition to the team for the 2022 T20 World Cup. The right-arm pacer last represented his country in the 2021 T20 World Cup, therefore he is presently irrelevant in the shortest format.

He is not a member of India’s T20I team, but his efforts in the Indian Premier League have had an influence (IPL). The 31-year-old was crucial with the new ball and led the Gujarat Titans (GT) bowling attack in IPL 2022, taking 20 wickets in 16 games.

Parthiv Patel stated on Cricbuzz that the next ODI series against England is a wonderful opportunity for Shami to demonstrate his mettle:

“He has a good opportunity in this ODI series to show that he can bowl in the death overs. He could vouch for his spot in the T20 World Cup. India already have Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah, and if you get the quality and experience of Shami, it will make a huge difference.”

Over the past three seasons, Shami has been among the IPL’s most reliable pacers. Since the tournament’s 2019 edition, he has claimed 78 wickets.

Parthiv Patel Surprised By Mohammed Shami’s Exclusion From The T20I Plans

Patel expressed his amazement at the ace bowler’s exclusion from the T20I plans.

“I am surprised as to why he is not seen as a T20 bowler. The way he bowled for Gujarat Titans, he claimed a wicket in the first over on so many occasions. Earlier it was said that he cannot bowl in the death overs, but he has been doing that pretty well for Gujarat and Punjab.”

The Bengali-born pacer is regarded as an essential part of the red-ball system. With a strong showing in the forthcoming ODI series, he may make his claim in the shortest format.

Shami has only been able to play for India in 17 T20Is after making his debut in 2014. In those games, he has taken 18 wickets, but at a cost as his economy rate is 9.55.

During the same Cricbuzz panel, veteran Indian bowler RP Singh noted that the right-arm pacer has the ability to alter the match’s dynamic:

“He is a skilled bowler, he is experienced as well. He has made an impact regardless of the format. You are bound to concede runs in this format, but, a bowler like him can turn around the contest on his day.”

The Oval will host the opening One-Day International between India and England later today, July 12. Shami’s potential inclusion in the starting XI for the Men in Blue is still up in the air.
