Team India left for Australia with a 14-member squad and support staff to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022 on Thursday, October 6.

India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah has been ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup due to a stress fracture. The BCCI will announce the name of the replacement in the coming days. Mohammed Shami, Deepak Chahar and Mohammed Siraj, who are the contenders to replace Bumrah.

Former India batter Wasim Jaffer feels that Deepak Chahar should replace Jasprit Bumrah in India’s T20 World Cup squad, considering his recent performances in India’s 2-1 series win over South Africa.

Deepak Chahar Can Contribute With The bat – Wasim Jaffer

Deepak Chahar was impressive with both bat and ball in India’s three-match T20 series against South Africa. The right-arm medium pacer took two wickets for 24 runs in the first T20I and then scored 31 runs from 17 balls at No. 9 in the final match.

“I think, I probably see Deepak Chahar being the replacement because he is getting to play and he is going to play again in the ODIs and it makes sense, he is somebody who is bowling well and he is someone who can contribute with the bat as well.

“He is a quality new-ball bowler and I do not think he lacks variation. If you give him the odd over at the death, he can do something about it,” Jaffer said during a discussion on ESPNcricinfo.

Deepak Chahar Might Be That Replacement – Wasim Jaffer

The former Indian opener said that Shami has not played any competitive cricket for some time and it is unfair to pick him directly for the T20 World Cup.

“Shami has not played any cricket so it will be unfair to put him straight into the T20 World Cup squad without any game time.

“If he is selected, he would get a couple of practice games, but to put him straight into T20 World Cup without any match practice, it will be unfair. So, I think probably looks like Deepak Chahar might be that replacement,” he added.
