Mushfiqur Rahim Suffers Freak Injury In The Gym; Receives Four Stitches

In a recent development, Bangladesh has suffered a major setback after wicketkeeper-batsman Mushfiqur Rahim sustained a freak injury while working out in the gym. The Bogra-born cricketer injured his left leg below the knee, following which he was rushed to a hospital in Dhaka.

The 35-year-old received four stitches and was advised a rest of two weeks to recover from the injury, Bangladesh news outlet BDcrictime reported. Mushfiqur Rahim took up the optional gym session to get himself fit for the upcoming edition of the National League, starting October 10.

Mushfiqur is set to ply his trade for the Rajshahi Division in the national tournament. Recently, the veteran announced his retirement from T20Is after serving his nation for more than a decade. His decision came after he failed to perform to expectations in the Asia Cup 2022.

Following the decision to hang up his boots in the shortest format, Mushfiqur’s childhood coach revealed that the right-hander was trying way too hard in the nets to adapt to the needs of T20 cricket. His coach mentioned that Mushfiqur was trying to go out of his character to turn his T20 career around.

As far as Mushfiqur’s stats are concerned, he remains one of the most prolific run-scorers for the Tigers across all three formats. In 82 Tests, 236 ODIs and 102 T20Is, Mushfiqur has amassed 5235, 6774 and 1500 runs respectively, comprising 17 centuries and 73 half-centuries.

Recently, Tamim Iqbal also retired from T20Is after last playing for Bangladesh in the shorter format way back in 2020. 36-year-old Mahmudullah Riyad also failed to find a spot in the national squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia.
