On Sunday, November 6, at Adelaide Oval, the Netherlands stunned South Africa by 13 runs in their final Super 12 match, causing what may have been the biggest upset of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2022.

Once more, the Proteas wasted their opportunity to advance to the ICC tournament semifinals. Now, Pakistan or Bangladesh would advance to the top four along with India from Group 2 with a victory.

The Proteas, who won their first three consecutive matches, lost two on the trot to crash out of the showpiece T20 event. They failed to chase down 159 runs against the Netherlands to bow out of the tournament after another poor batting effort, which has been the case for so many years now.

With six points from four games, India has maintained its lead atop Group 2 standings. Pakistan is third in the standings with four points after the same number of games, while South Africa is second with five.

The Netherlands, who began the match in last place, have now passed Zimbabwe and Bangladesh to take over fourth place with an equal number of points. The Men in Green are positioned above the Dutch because they have a higher net run rate (+1.117) than they do.

With the same number of points as the Netherlands but a worse net run rate, Bangladesh is ranked fifth overall. With three points from four games, Zimbabwe, who has one game left, is currently last.

The Netherlands upset South Africa’s team in their final Super 12 game:

The Netherlands scored 158/4 in 20 overs after Temba Bavuma, the Proteas captain, asked them to bat first. By playing it safe, the Dutch openers amassed 58 runs for the first wicket in 8.3 overs. The initial South African breakthrough came from Aiden Markram.

Soon after, the Netherlands picked up the pace thanks to Tom Cooper’s quickfire hit of 35 off just 19 balls, which included two boundaries and each of two sixes. As Colin Ackerman hit an undefeated 41 off just 26 deliveries, the momentum kept going and his team reached a lofty total.

At the midway point, it appeared to be a straightforward run chase, but South Africa messed it up. The hitters’ lives were made harder by the bowlers’ accurate bowling. They had trouble setting boundaries and finished the powerplay with a score of 39/2.

While Rilee Roussouw attempted to free the team with a 19-ball 25, other batters were unable to significantly advance the cause. The Proteas missed by 13 runs with 36 required off the final 12 balls, losing the game.

The bowler of pick for the Netherlands was Brandon Glover, who finished with figures of 3/9 in his two overs. The biggest upset of the T20 World Cup 2022 was caused by Fred Klaassen, who also took two wickets and conceded just 20 runs at a mere five runs per over.
