Sunil Gavaskar, the legendary batsman, criticized India skipper and veteran Indian opener, Rohit Sharma after Team India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the season opener of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

In a rematch of their blockbuster rivalry, Rohit Sharma’s Team India faced Babar Azam’s Pakistan in their tournament opener on Sunday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).

Despite overtaking MS Dhoni to become the Indian player with the most T20 World Cup appearances, Rohit, 35, had a disappointing performance with the bat against Pakistan at the MCG. As the senior hitter fell for 4 from 7 balls in the fourth over of the Indian innings, Rohit displayed a rare batting inaccuracy.

Sunil Gavaskar reflected on Rohit’s lackluster effort against Pakistan and noted that he had been out of form in the run-up to the T20 World Cup. “The only genuine reason to be concerned has been that Rohit Sharma hasn’t been scoring as well as he usually does lately. I believe that once he starts rolling, it will be quite simple for others to follow,” Sunil Gavaskar told India Today.

“A good platform is what everyone looks at”: Sunil Gavaskar

Gavaskar, a former India captain, anticipates Rohit to provide India with a strong starting point in their upcoming Super 12 match at the T20 World Cup. On Thursday, Team India under Rohit will compete against the Netherlands.

In their high-profile match against Pakistan at the MCG, Indian openers Rohit and KL Rahul failed to deliver for Team India, who is captained by Virat Kohli. Rahul and Rohit both scored exactly the same in the thrilling last over against the Green Army.

“Everyone looks for a good platform. You provide a good platform and a good start, and it makes it much easier for someone coming down at four or five to start hitting the ball from the first ball” Sunil Gavaskar said.

“They don’t have to settle in or steady the ship, as India had to do against Pakistan when they were four wickets down for 31. So, even if you get off to a slightly slower start, perhaps getting to 40 after losing one wicket, that is a much better platform than 31/4 “Gavaskar added.
