IND vs PAK: 3 Reasons Why Babar Azam Is Destined To Fail In ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2022

1. Poor Run In Last Asia Cup 2022- The Previous Tournament Featuring More Than 2 Teams

Babar Azam endured a poor outing in the continental tournament this year, as he scored only 68 runs in six innings, registering a best score of 30 against Sri Lanka in the Super 4 game. In the high-octane final against Sri Lanka, the Pakistan skipper failed to put on a show and fell for a 6-ball 5.

Babar Azam’s poor performance in the Asia Cup as an opener has also raised some eyebrows. His tally of 68 runs in 6 matches with a strike rate of 107.93 has been a cause of concern for Pakistan. Although he recovered somewhat by scoring 285 runs in 7 T20Is against England averaging 57 at a strike rate of 143.22 and in the New Zealand tri-series where he scored 192 runs averaging 48 in 5 T20Is.

He scored only 10 in the group league and 14 in the Super 4 stage against India in Asia Cup 2022. He has played only 3 times against India. He scored 68* off 52 balls in the previous ICC T20 World Cup 2021 as Pakistan beat India in the opening fixture.

2. Pressure As Skipper- Batting Average Dropped After Being Appointed Skipper

Babar Azam has captained 59 T20Is so far, where he has won 36 and lost 18 games. He has a winning percentage of 66.66 so far. It is safe to say that he has a pretty decent record as a captain for Pakistan in T20Is. He would want to continue that in the ICC 2022 T20 World Cup as well.

However, his overall batting average of 43.66 is more than his T20I batting average as a skipper-40.44. He hasn’t performed well in T20Is against Bangladesh (average of 9), and Asia Cup 2022 (average of 11.33) since the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.

3. Less Experience Of Playing In Australia- The Venue Of T20 World Cup 2022

Babar Azam has played only 3 T20Is in Australia, which is the venue for ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Although he scored two fifties-50 and 59* apart from 6 in Australia, the relatively less experience of playing in tough Australian conditions may haunt him in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. All of his matches came in 2019, 3 years back.
