The ongoing training camp here in preparation for the T20 World Cup will give the players the much-needed time to unwind and work on their specialised skills to deal with Australian conditions, according to India’s strength and conditioning coach Soham Desai, who believes the team is frequently “rushed” into major tournaments.
In preparation for their World Cup opener against Pakistan in Melbourne on October 23, India had their first training session in Perth on October 7, 2022. They will then play two exhibition games there on October 10 and 13, after which they will head to Brisbane for the ICC-organized practice matches.

“The upcoming 8-10 days are very crucial for us leading into the World Cup and I can’t thank the management and BCCI enough to get these 8 days because we always feel we are rushed into the big tournaments playing so much cricket as Indian team.
“…. but these 8 days, we are going to gradually build ourselves both physically as well as on the skills front to lead us nicely into the first game of the World Cup,” Desai told the BCCI website.
Goal Is To Get Some Time On Australian Pitches: Rahul Dravid
Rahul Dravid, the team’s head coach, explained that the goal of the camp was to get the players acclimated to Australia’s pace and bounce because the majority of them had no prior playing experience in these circumstances before the squad left for Perth.
“The goal in Perth specifically is to get some time on these pitches as well as to break the monotony of playing two back-to-back bilateral series in India.
“It is going to be a good time for the group to unwind as well build on specific skill set that is required for the Australian conditions,” Desai added.
India will play official pre-tournament warm-up matches against Australia and New Zealand at the Gabba in Brisbane before their Super 12 opener against archrival Pakistan on October 23 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
