The recent failures against New Zealand have all but ended Steve Smith‘s chances of playing this year’s T20 World Cup and the Australia star seems to have made peace with it.

The Australian team management has given the right-handed batsman ample opportunities to cement his spot in the T20I side but he has failed to grab them. While he is definitely one of the most experienced players in the current Australian team, his form is a big worry for the team management.

The recently concluded series against New Zealand was his last T20 assignment before the T20 World Cup. In two games against the Black Caps, he registered scores of 11 and 4 while opening the innings. With Australia’s top three settled, he would be wishing for a place in the middle order. However, not having an IPL contract might hurt his chances as other players such as Cameron Green and Matthew Short will be playing the IPL.

As of now, Steve Smith’s chances of playing the T20 World Cup are looking done and dusted and the former Australia captain has said he is “not too fussed” about it. He also insisted that he just got two ‘decent balls’ while talking about getting out early against New Zealand.

“I got a couple of decent balls, to be fair. (Adam) Milne got one to take off in the second game, which was tough,” he told AAP while talking about his dismissals against New Zealand.

“Lockie, when that sun was setting, it was quite difficult to pick up and he gave me a nice in-swinger. Look, it wasn’t ideal, but it is what it is and whatever will be will be from here,” added the veteran batsman.

Speaking further, Steve Smith admitted that Australia’s top-order is well settled and he is now not too fussed about his place in the team for the World Cup.

“I think they’re pretty settled up top, to be honest, with (Travis) Head, Warner and (Mitch) Marsh in the top three,” he said.

“I’m not really sure what (selectors) want to do. I’m not really too fussed either way. If I’m there, I’m there. If I’m not, I’m not.”

As of now, Smith and his Australia teammates are preparing for the two-match Test series against New Zealand. The first Test is scheduled to be played from Thursday (February 29).
