The Ranji Trophy is India's premier first-class tournament. It is organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Started in 1934, it was first called 'the cricket championship of India' before being renamed in 1935.

The first season of the Ranji Trophy was held in the season 1934-35 with Madras and Mysore playing in the first-ever game. The game was held at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Madras (now Chennai). As of now, 38 teams played in the Ranji Trophy. Of the 38 Ranji Trophy teams32 teams play in the Elite Division while the other six participate in the Plate League.

In the Elite Division, the teams are divided into top tier (Group A, Group B) and second tier (Group C). The other teams form the lower tier (Plate Group). Five teams qualify for the quarterfinals from Group A and Group B while two teams from Group C and one team from the Plate Group make it to the last eight.
