Rohit Sharma-led India National Cricket Team won the first Test match of the two-match Test series against the Dimuth Karunaratne-led Sri Lanka National Cricket Team by an innings and 222 runs to gain 12 ICC World Test Championship (WTC) points.

The first Test match of the series between India National Cricket Team and Sri Lanka National Cricket Team took place at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali, Chandigarh. This was Rohit Sharma’s first match as Test captain, Virat Kohli’s 100th Test match and Sri Lanka’s 300th match in Test cricket.

Rohit Sharma, who was captaining India for the very first time in the purest format of the game, won the toss and opted to bat first.

On Day 1, the Indian team dominated and every batter made a significant contribution to the team. Captain Rohit Sharma was able to score 29 runs off 28 deliveries, including 6 fours and opener Mayank scored 33 runs off 49 balls including 5 fours.

Virat Kohli was able to score 45 runs off 76 balls in the first innings of his 100th Test match and his innings consisted of 5 amazing fours. Also, Hanuma Vihari got out after scoring 58 runs off 128 balls including 5 fours and Shreyas Iyer played a decent 27 runs knock.

The best performer for India on Day 1 was the young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant who smashed 96 runs off 97 balls including 9 fours and 4 sixes. He also smashed terrific 22 runs in the over of Lasith Embuldeniya and at the end of the day, India were at 357/6.

On Day 2 of the Test match, fans witnessed the ‘Ravindra Jadeja show’ as the senior all-rounder showed dominance and smashed an amazing 175* runs off 228 balls including 17 fours and 3 sixes. When India were in a strong position skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid decided to declare the innings and India ended up with 574 runs for 8 wickets.

Sri Lanka openers, while batting in the second innings, were unable to make any big contribution. Captain Dimuth Karunaratne contributed only 28 runs off 71 balls and Lahiru Thirimanne scored 17 runs off 60 balls. Angelo Mathews and Dhananjaya de Silva also failed to score big runs, Sri Lanka finished the day at 108/4 and they were trailing by 466 runs.

On Day 3, Sri Lanka were off to a poor start as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals and eventually got bowled out for 174, which led to India imposing a follow-on.

At the start of the day, Pathum Nissanka completed his half-century off 108 balls and Sri Lanka reached 150 runs in 56.1 overs. Nissanka added good 50 runs in 113 balls with Asalanka and at drinks, Sri Lanka were at 161/5 in 58 overs. Sri Lanka reached from 161/5 to 174/10 in no time as the lower order of Sri Lanka which consisted of Suranga Lakmal, Lasith Embuldeniya, Vishwa Fernando, and Lahiru Kumara, all combined contributed nothing.

In the second innings of Sri Lanka, opening batsman Lahiru Thirimanne got out for a 9-ball duck in the 3rd over. Batsman Pathum Nissanka, who was the top run-getter in Sri Lanka’s first innings, was dismissed by senior off-spinner Ashwin in the 7th over and he scored only 6 runs. Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne walked back to the pavilion after scoring just 27 runs off 46 balls including 6 fours after getting dismissed by senior speedster Mohammed Shami.

Dhananjaya de Silva scored 30 runs before getting dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja in the 36th over. At the score of 121, Sri Lanka lost three wickets including the wickets of Charith Asalanka, Angelo Mathews and Suranga Lakmal.

In the end, Indian bowlers did a great job and they bundled out Sri Lanka for 178 runs to win the game on Day 3 itself. In the last innings of the match all-rounder, Ravindra Jadeja and veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin bagged 4 wickets each and the senior pacer Mohammed Shami bagged 2 wickets.
