Batting great Sunil Gavaskar was all in praise of the Indian new ball bowling attack after their staggering performance in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka. He said that their heroics in the summit clash tell about the quality of the new ball attack.

Indian bowlers displayed a dominant performance in the final of the Asia Cup 2023 against Sri Lanka at R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. The Rohit Sharma-led side was asked to field first and they wreaked havoc across the opposition and left them doldrums.

Jasprit Bumrah drew the first blood for his side as he removed Kusal Perera in the very first over. After that, it was about Mohammed Siraj, who destroyed the Sri Lankan batting lineup as he picked up six wickets in a flash. Before Hardik Pandya chipped in and bagged three wickets that saw India bundling out hosts for just 50 runs.

Not only in the final but Indian bowlers bowled some impeccable lines and lengths throughout the tournament. They troubled all the oppositions and were on top of the game in almost every game. Their staggering performance was the main reason behind India winning their 8th Asia Cup title.

Sunil Gavaskar said that he hasn’t seen a performance like this from India in a while. He added that people always talk about Pakistan’s bowling attack but the Indian attack with Jasprit Bumrah being back isn’t far behind. Speaking to India today, he explained:

“Honestly, I can’t recall when we had something like that. But it just tells you the quality of the new ball attack, that India have. A lot of times, people talk about Pakistan’s new ball attack. But I think this Indian new ball attack, with Bumrah coming back.

“Bumrah might not have got the wickets, but he kept the pressure on. Don’t forget, we have someone like Mohammed Shami, who is not playing in the XI. So it just tells you that the reserve India has, as far as pace bowling is concerned.”

Sunil Gavaskar further heaped rich praise on Mohammed Siraj for his outstanding performance. He highlighted how the pacer ran to even stop the boundary, which reflects his enthusiasm. He added:

“Mohammed Siraj deserves all the praise. I also love the way everybody in the Indian team was laughing when he having taken those wickets, he chased the ball to the boundary. Just shows the energy of the man, the enthusiasm of the man to be totally involved. He is one of those cricketers, who gives every ball, everything.”

Mohammed Siraj ended with 6 wickets to his name. He returned with the figures of 6/21, which is the second-best in the history of the Asia Cup. He also registered the fastest-ever 5-wicket haul in a spell for India in international cricket. The pacer took just 16 balls to achieve the feat.
