Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag offered valuable advice to middle-order batter Suryakumar Yadav after the first ODI against Australia. Virender Sehwag suggested that Suryakumar Yadav should focus on his mindset and avoid overthinking about the dismissal.
Suryakumar Yadav scored his third ODI fifty in the series opener in Mohali on Friday, September 22. The right-handed batter scored 50 runs off 49 deliveries, including five fours and a six. He formed a crucial partnership with KL Rahul to help the team secure the victory.
You Don’t Need Practice – Virender Sehwag
Speaking after the first ODI between India and Australia, Virender Sehwag stated that the batter’s skills remain intact and don’t require excessive practice. He emphasized that focusing on mistakes is more important.
“I didn’t need to. When you go out there, you put your 100 percent effort. Sometimes, you get out and it’s fine. But for me, that was it. I wouldn’t practice until the next day,” Sehwag told Cricbuzz.
“I don’t know the reasons why he was knocking after the game, but I believed that you prepared for this particular game, you had the chance, you made a mistake and got out. Focus on the mistake, the mindset is more important. The skills won’t go anywhere, you don’t need practice,” he added.
Suryakumar registered three golden ducks when he last faced Australia in the ODI series earlier this year. The team management backed him even though he failed to replicate his T20I success in ODI cricket.
The Mental Tuning Is More Important – Virender Sehwag
The former Indian opener emphasized the importance of mindset over skills when assessing Suryakumar Yadav‘s performance. He suggested that focusing on mental tuning is crucial, especially after a series of low scores.
“It’s the mindset. What were you thinking when you play that shot, whether it was the right decision or not. The mental tuning is more important. You should’ve focussed on skills when you had those three ducks in a row. Now that you’ve scored runs, you have to tune yourself mentally.”
Suryakumar is expected to retain his place in the playing XI for the second ODI against Australia at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Sunday, September 24. However, he can be dropped for the final game as the senior players return to the team.
