Jos Buttler’s career as a full-time English captain hasn’t started well. After losing the T20 series 2-1 to India, England was thumped in the first ODI by India at the Oval on Tuesday as they were beaten by 10 wickets.

Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to field first, Virat Kohli was missing from the XI due to a niggle, but India wouldn’t have needed his services as they were chasing just 111 runs.

England on the other hand was boosted by the arrival of Ben Stokes, Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root into their side.

But their inclusion in the side meant little as India’s new bowl bowlers ripped through the top order. 4 of England’s batters got out for a duck.

We Came Third In A Two Way Race, India Were Brilliant: Jos Buttler

Jos Buttler tried to score runs quickly but he was bounced out by Mohammad Shami for 30 after that David Willey and Brydon Carse had a little partnership which took England’s score to more than 100. England avoided getting bowled out for their lowest-ever ODI total, but they still registered their lowest ever score against India.

After the game, Jos Buttler said, “Really tough day. But we’ve got to dust ourselves quickly for the game at Lord’s. Muggy conditions, we felt like it would swing. India exploited the conditions. In the T20s and in the powerplay, they bowled brilliantly. Bumrah is a great bowler to come up against.

He bowled fantastically well today. It’s never easy when you are forced to take wickets. I asked bowlers to take risks to try and take wickets.  Isn’t nice when your bowlers have to take as many risks and when you ask so much out of them.”

Buttler would hope that England can make a strong comeback in the next game.
