Jonny Bairstow continued his fine form this summer as he hit his 4th century in 3 games and 2nd of the match as England chased down the highest total in the 4th innings in their history. This was England’s 4th straight successful chase in Test cricket and in 3 of those Bairstow has been the man to lead the chase.

Bairstow was at his brutal best against New Zealand but against India, he had a balanced approach to his batting. Even in the first innings when the Indian team was on top, Bairstow saw off the opening spell and then opened up and played the way he has been doing the whole summer.

Even in the 4th innings, he came in when England had lost 3 wickets for 2 runs and they were still more than 250 runs behind India’s total but he again saw off the initial spell he faced from India’s best bowlers but once he settled in he was back to business.

He along with Joe Root stitched together a match-winning partnership and paved the way for England’s most successful chase in their history.

Bairstow for his performance was declared the player of the match. After the game, Bairstow said, “It’s great fun at the moment, this last month has been fantastic, we can see the smile on the boys’ faces. I’ve stripped it all back to the basics.

“I’m not a big fan of bubbles and sitting in rooms playing computer games, but it’s great to be back, day five sold out in 90 minutes. It’s about having the enjoyment factor, not being afraid of failing, and putting the pressure back on the opposition, we’re going to lose games along the way, but the positive brand is fun to play.

“It was all under control,” he said of the verbals and the match situation. “World-class bowlers, they try and intimidate, amazing players, try to shift it back onto them, periods of Test cricket when you have to consolidate, it started reversing so it got interesting again, then this morning’s a different morning. “Just two lads from Yorkshire, grown-up playing together from the academy to Test matches, it’s pretty special.”

Bairstow has hit 6 centuries in the last 8 Tests.
