Indian opener KL Rahul is reportedly said to miss the upcoming tour to England as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) plans to send the Indian vice-captain to Germany for medical treatment.

On the eve of the T20I series against South Africa, Rahul, who was set to lead India in Rohit Sharma’s absence, was ruled out of the five-match series owing to a groin injury. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the BCCI has decided to send the Karnataka player to Germany by the end of June or in early July.

“That is correct, the board is working on his fitness and he will be going to Germany soon,” BCCI secretary Jay Shah told Cricbuzz on Thursday (June 16).

Rahul’s treatment means that he will miss the rescheduled Test and six white-ball games (three ODIs and as many T20Is) against England next month. Rahul, who scored 315 runs in four Tests at 39.38 against England last year, hasn’t played for India since February and his last Test appearance was made in January against South Africa.

Who will replace KL Rahul in England?

Rahul also missed the Test series against Sri Lanka in India due to an injury. Indian team’s Test contingent with a few members of the coaching staff left for England from Mumbai on Thursday morning.

According to a report by Cricbuzz, there was no plan to announce Rahul’s replacement, unless of course there was a request from the team management. The BCCI will have to name a vice-captain after the latest development. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant, who is leading India in the ongoing T20I series against South Africa, could be the front-runner for the vice-captain’s role.

Rahul’s Karnataka and India teammate Mayank Agarwal could likely replace him in the Test squad for the rescheduled fifth Test, starting on July 1 at Edgbaston in Birmingham. India is leading the five-match series 2-1 and the team has a great opportunity to win their first Test series in England since 2007.
